2month apprenticeship -12day workshop in stone masonry
“Kalderimi X2” took place from 9 September to 31 October 2019, combining a two-month apprenticeship for a new generation of craftsmen from Greece and the Balkans and a two-week workshop on stone masonry targeting a broader audience. One of the main goals of this event was to re-introduce Greek and Balkan craftsmen to the –more or less– forgotten traditional technique of ‘kalderimi’ and engage with a gap of knowledge that has already cost dearly to the traditional settlements of Epirus and the historic ensembles of Balkans in general.
Overall, 9 ‘apprentices’ and 25 participants from Greece, Bosnia, Albania, Serbia, Bulgaria and Croatia worked side by side on the restoration of the old cobbled pathway (around 400 m2) that leads to the historical Bridge of Plaka, under the guidance of experienced masons-tutors. Moreover, this program included lectures given by renowned professors and professionals, as well as hands-on seminars and demonstrations, from extracting stone to preparing and applying lime and mud mortars.
